January at Frog Hollow:
The garden is mostly dormant this time of year, it's too wet to work the ground and we're all still tired from last season. The kale soldiers on though and for a while the chard, brussels sprouts and cabbages did too.
We do still have lettuce in the cold frame and it seems to be thriving. It's not much but it's welcome.
We're trying an experiment this year with a sort of 'mechanized double-digging'. We lured our strongest neighbor over and got him to put the auger to use drilling into the beds a couple of feet. It really turns the soil over! We only did half of the garden before the neighbor and the auger had had enough, but this is good in that we can compare these beds with the ones left undisturbed and see if there is any notable difference.
We had some snow...
but the lettuce survived.
