2020 Review
From April 2020 this author wrote: The worst pandemic in a century is hammering the world. We're socially-distanced, sheltering in place, and trying to stay healthy. More than usual, we are eager for the work to begin in the garden. The weather has yet to calm down, but the seedlings are maturing and when the winter rains stop and the temperature warms up we can begin the work of awakening our old friend. We'll be even more grateful than usual for the familiar nature of the work, the steady...

A very good garden season overall.
19. February 2018
Well, not quite yet. There isn't much to say really, it's too early to start seedlings and the weather has been at turns inspiring and depressing. The garden is planned; the seeds are selected; the occasional days of clean up and weeding have already strained the back and muscles, but we're ready to give it another go when the spring arrives.
12. May 2017
It finally stopped raining long enough for us to work up 4 beds and get some seeds and starts into the ground. It's a good beginning, but the rain has returned again so we're back on the bench waiting for another weather break. In a way it's good timing as the dam which waters the garden washed out during the winter and until the necessary repairs are made we would have a hard time keeping up with the watering. Watch this space.
23. March 2017
It's been a long winter here in the garden and a long time since we updated the website. When there isn't much to do there isn't much to say. As you can see in the photos, we had cold and snow in December and January (we're two miles back from the Pacific Ocean mind you) and we've had more rainfall than we've seen in quite a few years. During the first 2 weeks of March we measured roughly 15" of rain in ten days. That'll do.
12. November 2016
The 2016 harvest is mostly completed but the weather is still so mild that we decided to try one more lettuce crop before the frosts arrive. The artichokes don't seem to know they should rest now and the chard, kale, brussels sprouts and leeks are still growing well.
31. August 2016
It's September in the garden and your faithless blogger somehow managed not to update the site during the prime months of July and August. Much has happened since the last posting, so please visit the photo gallery below to see how our season has progressed. The garden has been very productive this year and for the most part everything grew well and prospered. It seems as if everything was about a month early this year and with today's chilly rain and gloom it feels even later in the year than...
23. June 2016
As you can tell from these two photos the garden has grown quite a bit in the past 5 weeks since the initial planting was completed on May 13th. We had some cold weather which slowed things down, and nocturnal visits by slugs and perhaps even a rabbit have caused a few setbacks, but overall it's well on the way to a good season. Weeding, watering, picking, planting. On and on it goes.
15. May 2016
We had some good weather toward the end of March and were able to awaken the garden a bit early this year. We began turning over the beds with the new broad fork on April 2nd. Little by little the work has continued and the 2016 garden has taken shape. Planting was completed on May 13th, though we'll add things here and there as the season continues. Now we just need some warmth and sunshine!
03. February 2016
It's February in Frog Hollow and that means rain followed by more rain mixed with showers, high surf, flooding and possible thunderstorms for the foreseeable future. Seed catalogs act as 'coping mechanisms' this time of year and until the rain relents there is little to do but plan and prepare for the sun's return. We'll be starting seedlings soon and each day is a little longer. With luck, we'll be able to employ the new broadfork in April or so and the cycle will begin again. We have big...
